Alena's Birthday (Jan 29)

Alena turned 6 years old on the 29th. Hannah gave her some presents that she made and some things that she "bought" at AWANA with her "Bible bucks" (they get them for memorizing scripture). My mom send a truckload of books and the Berrys sent her a cookie/flower thing - it was very cute.

This year, we gave Alena the option of either getting presents, or of sponsoring a child through Compassion International. She decided on the latter and, as we did with Hannah when she was six, we picked a child with her same age and birthdate to support for as long as we're able. I made her choose between the presents and the sponsoring because I wanted her to know that there was a cost and sacrifice that was being made.

We strongly support the program at Compassion. You can check them out here: www.compassion.com It goes beyond simply buying food and medicine for a needy child. You also communicate on a regular basis with them. (Hannah is good pen-pals with her sponsored child, Heidith, from Bolivia.) She gets so excited when she gets a letter from her and writes back the same day. Alena's new sponsored child is Arelys, from Nicaragua. Time to bone up on our Spanish. :)

Did you notice that missing front tooth??? Alena wanted a snow theme for her birthday. The snowman turned out nicely thanks to my mom who sent me some assorted cute cake pans one year and an icing decorator another. Hummm...perhaps she knew I would use those things since she also had five children. The girls had a great time making and decorating their own snowmen for snack out of cupcakes sliced in thirds. Erilynn felt a need to use up all the toppings Hannah and Alena left behind. Which is why it took her three days to eat all of her snowman!

Good job on the cake! I know how painful it can be to squeeze out a billion little star shapes all over a cake, LOL. Looks yummy!

Happy Birthday Alena!
